BECOME A QUALIFIED LIFEGUARD
To patrol our beach, you must be qualified as a surf lifeguard or patrol support. If you're over 14 and able to swim, we'll train you up to gain your Surf Lifeguard Award or if swimming is a challenge for you, your Patrol Support Award.

Training covers modules in surf skills, basic first aid, rescue techniques, and risk management. Some of the skills are taught theoretically, but most are taught in a practical environment. Once your training is completed, you will be examined. The exam will assess your key lifeguarding skills, and involves;
- 400m timed pool swim (completed in under 9 minutes)
- Tube rescue in a pool environment
- Theory Test CPR and first aid
- Radio set up and use Hand signals
- 200m run-swim-run, in the surf environment
- Tube rescue in the surf environment
Trainings
Summer trainings:
From mid October to April senior members are encouraged to turn up to thursday beach trainings, these run from 6-9pm. Trainings cover beach theory, first aid, swimming, self defense, rescue boards. IRB training also runs at the same time. these training are to help members gain lifeguard awards aswell as IRB awards.
Winter Trainings:
Winter training provide our lifeguard time to keep their fitness up aswell as work on their technique on things like, Holds, Tows and Tube Rescues. These training run from 7-8pm at Splash Palace. Theory sessions for IRB training can also occur during these times.
PATROL TIMES
Oreti Surf Life Saving Club Patrols are rostered Saturdays and Sundays as well as the odd public holidays from mid November to the end of March.
Patrols open on Saturday & Sunday at 12.00pm and close at 5.00pm - if the beach is super busy we may stay open until 6:00pm.
Oreti Beach IS NOT patrolled by regional guards during the summer, so if you are swimming during the week please be aware we won't be there if you get into trouble.
Please follow instructions of the lifeguards on patrol.
Remember to always SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS.
Please note that during winter, there are no patrols at Oreti Beach
If an emergency situation arises when no lifeguards are present, dial 111 and ask for Police assistance.
